W4427 RARE WINCHESTER MODEL 1886 RIFLE IN SCARCE CALIBER 38-70; 26 inch octagon barrel and full length tube magazine show about 50% blue with the balance thinning to brown with gray on the high edges. Very good bore is bright and fairly shiny with strong rifling. Lyman front sight and Winchester No. 22 sporting rear. The receiver, hammer and lever show faint patterns of the original case colors with the balance mostly a lightly mottled nickel like gray patina. Walnut stocks fit decent and have a fresh coat of finish with the forearm showing a repaired crack and a stippled pattern diamond with 2 line border added to the bottom. The straight grip buttstock shows a couple tightly glued cracks at the front and a filled chip next to the upper tang. Research in John Madl’s book “Identifying Your 1886” shows total production of 1886’s chambered in 38-70 at only 1,167. Manufactured in 1895 in very hard to find caliber .38-70.
