W4363 SPECIAL ORDER WINCHESTER MODEL 1876 SHORT RIFLE CHAMBERED FOR .40-60 [A]

$8,500.00

24 inch octagon barrel. Full length magazine. Original No. 21 sporting front sight and No. 22 Sporting rear. Plain walnut forearm with matching straight grip buttock features a leather sling on factory sling swivels and a crescent rifle buttplate. Near very good condition overall retaining perhaps 20% original finish mostly in protected areas with the balance a mottled grey brown patina. The extractor has been replaced with a 1st model open-top type that does not have the hook to draw the dust cover back. This is likely what has caused a chip to be broken out of the the rear edge of the barrel bridge. The action is otherwise tight and sound.  The wood is solid and full fitting with typical wear and handling marks. The leather sling shows the distress of old age and may actually be the original. Comes with Factory Letter showing it left the factory in 1885 as a Model 1876 Rifle with a 24 inch Octagon barrel chambered for Caliber 40/60, with a Plain trigger, Sporting sights, and Sling and Swivels. The Winchester Model 1876 “Centennial” Rifle book by Herbert Houze shows that there are only 169 Model 1876 rifles with 24 inch octagon barrels chambered in 40-60 and only 30 of them were fitted with Sling and Swivel making this rifle quite rare.
