Description

W4112 WINCHESTER-POPE MODEL 1885 HI-WALL TARGET RIFLE IN 33-40 POPE CALIBER; 30 inch octagon No. 4 weight barrel chambered in 33-40 caliber with a very good bore. The original Winchester barrel was chambered in 32-40 and is marked as such with the addition of  “RIFLED BY H.M. POPE HARTFORD CONN.” stamped on the top barrel flat. The bottom of the barrel is marked “87” as well as the original false muzzle and brass bullet starter are marked with “87” as well. Barrel retains about 50% thinning blue blending to a brown patina. Top of the barrel has two sets of holes for a pair of scope blocks and have filler screws in them. The bottom of the barrel is drilled and tapped about six inches from the muzzle most likely for a rest of some sort. Sights include a globe front with removable insert, there is no rear sight seat and a Pope windage adjustable tang mounted peepsight. Receiver retains most original blue with some loss on both sides at the top of the frame. Features adjustable double set triggers that work and a Pope finger loop lever. Deluxe walnut checkered forearm has an original tuning fork palm rest. Highly figured American black walnut checkered pistolgrip buttstock has a cheekpiece and is fitted with a Swiss buttplate. The .33-40 Pope is a wildcat cartridge designed around 1900 by Harry Pope. The cartridge is a necked up 32-40 Ballard and was Pope’s favorite wildcat. It was often used with great success by him. A good looking Winchester Target rifle from early 1906.
