MHG1096 SMITH & WESSON MODEL 3 SCHOFIELD SECOND STANDARD MODEL; 6 Shot revolver with 4-3/8 inch round barrel chambered for the 45 S&W Schofield cartridge. Good bore that has visible rifling and very fine light roughness throughout. Blade front sight. Good markings on barrel. Metal surfaces are a mottled gray patina. Hints of case colors on the hammer. “U.S.” marking on the butt indicating it is not a Commercial Model. “E” and “P” inspector marks on barrel and cylinder. Walnut grips are in good condition and have been lightly sanded. A total of 5,285 2nd Model Schofields were delivered to the US Army between 1876 and 1877. After U.S. Army use many of the Schofields were sold to express agencies who then shortened their barrels and refinished them for civilian issue. Also included is a photo copy of the factory letter from Smith & Wesson. A good example of a military revolver from the old west!
