C486 COLT MODEL 1855 PERCUSSION REVOLVING MILITARY PATTERN CARBINE IN 56 CAL WITH BAYONET LUG [A]

$19,500.00

C486 COLT MODEL 1855 PERCUSSION REVOLVING MILITARY PATTERN CARBINE IN 56 CAL WITH BAYONET LUG; 21 inch part octagon barrel chambered in 56 caliber with a very good bore that shows light roughness and crisp rifling. Sights include a German silver blade front and three-leaf rear. There is also a short rectangular lug on the right side of the barrel for mounting a saber bayonet. Most thinning barrel blue remains with some toning to plum. Most of the original military pattern blue finish remains on the side hammer frame with the balance toning to a brown/gray patina. “COL. COLT HARTFORD CT. U.S.A” is marked in the top strap groove of the frame just behind a gas port hole that is drilled over the breech end of the barrel. 5 shot fluted cylinder is marked “PATENTED SEPT 10th 1850” in one flute. Upper tang is marked  “Nov 24 1857” followed by the serial number. A period screw has been added in the lower tang just behind the trigger guard which is marked “56 CAL./K” on the left side. A case hardened loading lever is under the barrel. Sling swivels are mounted on the bottom of the frame and trigger guard. The re-oiled walnut stock is in very good condition and has mild scrapes and dings. Carbine style steel buttplate. Smooth crisp functioning action. The rarest variation in the carbine series is the Artillery Model with not more than 25 produced with a 21 inch barrel. These featured Military grade blue no forearm and oil-stained walnut stocks. 56 caliber 5-shot fluted cylinder, sling swivels and German silver blade front with folding leaf rear sights graduated to 600 yards. Hard to find a better example of this very high condition and extremely scarce Colt Model 1855 variation. A hard to find Colt for the advanced collector.
