C485 SCARCE COLT FIRST MODEL 1855 PERCUSSION REVOLVING RIFLE IN 36 CALIBER; 18 inch part octagon barrel chambered in 36 caliber with a very good bore that has distinct rifling. Sights include a dovetailed blade front with an adjustable notch rear. Top of the barrel at the breech is marked  “{COLT’S PT./1856}” and “{ADDRESS COL. COLT/HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.}”. Barrel retains a strong amount of original blue. A cleaning rod is fitted along the left side of the barrel and frame. Most glossy original blue remains on the frame with a the balance brown/gray patina. The cylinder is marked “COLT’S PATENT/SPORTING RIFLE” and the Hunter and Deer roll scene remains distinct and the markings are crisp. The First Model’s distinctive double spur trigger guard has a crack in the trigger guard tang. There is an oiler fitted to the left side and a toothed case hardened loading lever under the barrel. The walnut stock is in very good condition with an old coat of protective varnish added and shows moderate scrapes and dents. The stock is also marked with an old “1573” marking on each side of the wrist. Rifle style buttplate. Smooth crisp functioning action. There were around 18,300 of these Model 1855 revolving cylinder long arms (Sporting Rifles, Military Rifles and Carbines) that were produced before production ceased in 1864. Only 1,000 of these First Model rifles and carbines were manufactured from 1856-1859 per “The Book of Colt Firearms” by Wilson. The book also lists just 400 Sporting Rifles produced in .36 caliber and just twenty-five .36 caliber Sporting Rifles with 18 inch barrels. Overall this is a very high condition and extremely scarce Colt Model 1855 variation. A hard to find rifle for the advanced Colt collector.
