Description

W259 WINCHESTER MODEL 1866 RIFLE WITH OCTAGON BARREL; 24 inch octagon barrel chambered in 44 RF caliber with a VG bore that has good rifling with some light roughness. Sights include a German silver blade front and sporting rear. The barrel is a medium brown color with good barrel address. Full length magazine tube and forend cap are a silver/gray color. Lightly cleaned at some time. Receiver has a dull aged brass patina. Lever is a chocolate brown color and the hammer is a brown/gray. Nice functioning action. This receiver started out its life as a carbine. There is quite a few in this serial range that were changed to rifles. It was done at the factory and is so stated on the Factory Letter. The walnut buttstock shows the usual handling mars and is a bit shy at the upper tang and towards the frame. The forearm is in quite good condition with a small crack coming off the forearm on the left side. Rifle style buttplate. This is a good looking example of an 1866 rifle made in 1879.
