Single shot trapdoor action with arsenal refurbishment star marked receiver, the breech block is marked “U.S. MODEL 1873” and lock plate marked “U.S. SPRINGFIELD 1873” next to Eagle. One piece walnut stock shows a worn cartouche on the left side wrist and is fit with saddle ring and a “US” marked trapdoor butt plate complete with the 3 piece cleaning rod and shell extractor inside. Near excellent bore is bright and shiny with decent 3 groove rifling. The action is mechanically sound with the receiver, breech block and lock plate showing faint remnants of color case hardened finish with the balance appearing a mottled gray/brown patina and the lock plate appearing much darker. The stock has a small splinter missing at the front top right edge and is otherwise solid with just light handling marks. Very nice example of an 1879 trapdoor carbine.
