C453 COLT MODEL 1878 DOUBLE ACTION REVOLVER IN 45 COLT; 7-1/2 inch round barrel chambered in 45 Colt caliber with a shiny bore that has visible rifling and some roughness. Barrel address is faint but readable. About half of the period applied nickel finish has flaked away and a brown patina remains. Checkered Colt hard rubber grips fit well and are numbered to the gun. Good Mechanics. There were over 51,000 of these made between 1878 – 1905 and this one was manufactured in 1885. Comes with some paperwork from Canada.

The Canadian Department of Militia and Defence purchased 1,001 Colt Model 1878 “Frontier” double-action revolvers from the New York outfitter Hartley & Graham. All 1,001 of the Canadian-contract revolvers were chambered in .45 Colt.. The revolvers were manufactured by Colt between 1883 and early 1885. The batch generally falls between the serial numbers 7473 and 14996. While purchased specifically for the 1885 Riel Rebellion, these revolvers remained in the Canadian military inventory for decades. Many were later issued to troops deployed in the Boer War (1899–1902) in South Africa, and about 300 saw limited re-issue during the First World War.
