W4504 WINCHESTER MODEL 1873 OPEN TOP RIFLE WITH 26 INCH BARREL IN 44 WCF; Rarely encountered Open Top rifle with Special order 26 inch octagon barrel chambered in 44 WCF caliber with a very good bore that has strong rifling and some scattered fine roughness. Sights include a white blade front and V-notch sporting rear with a combination folding tang. Barrel and full length magazine tube have faded to a brown patina with traces of blue in the protected areas. Forend cap is a brownish in color too. Receiver has traces of blue with the balance fading to brown. Hammer and lever are mostly gray with hints of case color. Special order Set trigger. Faded blue on the loading gate. Crisp functioning action. Walnut stock set is in good condition but lightly sanded and a bit shy in the wrist. Rifle style buttplate with 4-piece cleaning rod in the trapdoor. Not a bad looking Winchester variation that is seldom seen and was made in 1877. Complete with research form verifying the date and configuration as well a copy of The Gun Report from 1983 featuring an article about the Open Top Winchester 1873’s.
