MR1732 SAN FRANCISCO MARKED SPENCER MODEL 1865 BURNSIDE HEAVY BARREL RIFLE CONVERSION; 30-1/2 inch heavy octagon barrel chambered in 52 caliber. Bore has shine and good rifling with a few scattered light pits. Sights include a brass blade front and notch rear. Barrel is a plum/brown patina and is marked “A.J. PLATE SAN FRANCISCO CAL”. Also fitted with a wooden cleaning rod. Receiver is a gray/brown patina with light pitting scattered throughout. Double set triggers function properly. Saddle ring bar on the left side has been removed during the conversion. Straight grip stock is in good condition with a sling swivel inlet that has been filled and has some minor cracks and dings. A.J. PLATE was a famous San Francisco, California firearms dealer that converted a number of Civil War carbines to hunting rifles for the Western market. This is one of those Spencer carbines that has been converted for use on the harsh frontier for a settler that couldn’t afford a Henry or Winchester lever action rifle. A heavy gun at just under 14 pounds.
