MR1688 VERY NICE ENGRAVED GERMAN PERCUSSION DOUBLE RIFLE BY MORGENROTH; 29 3/4 inch solid rib Damascus barrels chambered in about 58 caliber with eight-groove rifling. Barrels are very good with most of the refinished brown and light twist patterns showing. Bright gold “***MORGENROTH IN GERNRODE***” inlay on top of the rib. Narrow gold bands at the breech with gold stars on the breech plugs. Sights include a dovetailed silver blade front and dovetailed notch rear. The locks have “MORGENROTH” on the right side and “IN GERNRODE” on the left and feature detailed scroll and game scene engraving on each side. Quite fancy with floral engraving below the nipples and scroll engraving on the upper tang that extends onto the rib. Sprung hammer stalls and bestial mouths with silver inlaid teeth on the hammers. Round patchbox lid has a finely detailed scene involving a buck in its natural habitat as well as floral border and scroll engraving. Fancy walnut half-stock with attractive extra figure has an engraved German silver ramrod entry pipe with plain German silver wedge escutcheons. Correct ramrod included. Horn trigger guard that encloses the pair of set triggers with fine checkering on the wrist and a large cheek rest. Some minor dings and handling mars. Complete with sling swivels and an engraved German silver heel and toe plates and a dark horn buttplate. Mechanically excellent. A good looking mid-19th century German double rifle.
