W3824 WINCHESTER MODEL 1873 CARBINE WITH SPECIAL ORDER RIFLE BUTT AND FACTORY LETTER; 20 inch carbine configuration chambered in 44 W.C.F. caliber. Bore shows roughness from heavy black powder use. Original front sight and a 2-leaf rear that appears to be calibrated to a midway position. Special order rifle style butt stock. As is typical for a well-used gun all the finish has wore away years ago and there are areas of pitting. Since then a dull blue finish has been applied. Legend on barrel is faint but all other markings are quite clear. Honest wear shows scuffs, scrapes and a minor crack in the wood but it is still quite solid. Very good overall. Good mechanics. You rarely see historic guns that came home from south of the border as solid as this one! Factory letter confirms configuration and interestingly states gun was shipped to Mexico in 1908. A 44 caliber 1873 carbine is the classic gun that everyone wants to add to their collection. Even better with a factory letter! A good example piece.
