Description

MR1717 SHARPS EXTRA HEAVY BARREL CONVERSION BUFFALO GUN CHAMBERED IN 40-90 SHARPS; Originally manufactured during the Civil War as a military pattern New Model 1863 carbine. It was later factory converted to a heavy barrel buffalo rifle chambered in .40-90 Sharps Necked cartridge (2 5/8 inch case) at the Sharps Bridgeport plant sometime in the late 1860s-1870s for commercial sale. The frame is numbered “C, 20687” on the upper tang and now has a 30-3/8 inch EXTRA HEAVY octagon barrel measuring 1-17/64 (1.265) inches across the flats at the muzzle. The top has the boxed “Old Reliable” marking along with “SHARPS RIFLE CO BRIDGEPORT, CONN.” ahead of the rear sight, with no caliber marking at the breech and is numbered C,20687 beneath the forearm to match the frame. Sights include a Beech combination folding front with a Springfield 1884 style Buffington folding ladder rear. It retains the original carbine style buttstock showing a military inspection cartouche on the center panel left side. The forearm is a replacement made to fit the massive barrel. The condition is about fine overall with the barrel showing about 70% original blue finish with a light freckling overall. The bore is excellent, bright and shiny with strong 5 groove rifling. The frame shows about 50% case colored finish with some light freckling. The walnut stocks are solid and full fitting with a few handling marks scattered here and there. This MASSIVE gun weighs almost 16 pounds.
