Springfield Rifle
(MR605-18-121) US MODEL 1884 TRAPDOOR SPRINGFIELD
This one has the real neat retractable spike bayonet. Some one has totally cleaned the metal, leaving it a silverish coloration. They did not over buff, markings show nicely. The wood on this gun is in very nice condition with cartouche still showing. There is the name "Hyland Company" on the buttstock. This is one of the later guns in the 545,XXX serial range. Mechanically VG. Bore is a little dirty with maybe a pit or two but in good condition. Has standard Buffington sight. This is a very decent looking Springfield. e

One side of the wood shows saddle wear and has worn the wood down nearly to the bbl. The whole stock is in well used condition. Springfield Rifle
(M5-736x-17-455) EXTREMELY RARE MODEL 1873 RICE TROWEL BAYONET
For use on Springfield rifles. This bayonet was designed by General Rice. It actually was kind of a good idea but it just didn't work out. The idea was that it would be a combination bayonet/digging tool. It really didn't do either very well. For one thing, the high brass didn't like it because it looked goofy in parades having a shovel on the end of a gun, and in the field it didn't work so good because soldiers were prone to leave it on the rifle while they were trying to dig a hole, thus either plugging the muzzle or even possibly bending the bbl if they got into rocky terrain. These were used for a short time by a couple of different units. Anyway, it makes for a very good collectable. These are in VG+ condition. They have some age markings to them but are still very nice. No dings and alot of blue remaining on the handle. A very unique item for anyone with a Springfield collection. e
